The original project (2001) was a fast-track design and construction of a special testing facility that had highly technical criteria for research. The mechanical and electrical engineering for this work was of a specialized nature posing challenges for air flow, space relative pressures and air quality standards. This project required special stand-by power and emergency power generation to support the research and experiments that required uninterruptable power. The system included a 300kVA diesel generator and a 130kVA uninterruptable power supply. The building had special plumbing and lighting systems, more than normally expected for commercial applications. All special equipment was specified and pre-ordered for the contractors so that an accelerated schedule could be met. The fast-track schedule was met to the satisfaction of the Owner. In 2012, W.E. Monks was engaged to provide a mechanical and electrical design for a new pilot plant to produce liquid hydrocarbons from synthesis gas (syngas) via the well-known and established catalytic chemical process called Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis. The project consists of the enclosing of an existing canopy structure to house the process equipment. The MEP design was for utility connections to the process equipment and for heating, ventilation, lighting and power. The space is a Class I, Division II Hazardous Location protected by a combustible gas detection system which alarmed and activated stages of ventilation. The HVAC system was a natural gas heating system was sufficient to maintain facility temperature in the 40-50 degree F range and needed to be functional under electrical power outages by utilizing the standby power system we designed. Ventilation air was provided and heated to maintain the target temperature range in the space. This system will also function during electrical utility outages. The electrical system design provided power to following equipment via the existing spare capacity we determined sufficient. • New natural gas compressor • New steam generator • Syngas booster compressor • RO/DI System • Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) Skid • SMR Layer • Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Skid Mechanical system design consisted of piping system design to connect natural gas, domestic cold water, RO/DI water, and steam from existing utilities to the SMR Layer, AF SMR Skid, Steam Generator, RO/DI System, and FT Skid. The steam connection to the FT Skid included a flange for future connection.
