The Cleveland Public Library (CPL) Main Library is a campus of buildings made up of three parts: The Main Building, a historic Walker and Weeks design built in 1925; the Louis Stokes Wing (LSW), a Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer design completed in 1997; and the Eastman Reading Garden, an outdoor urban plaza between the two buildings designed by the Olin Group and rededicated in 1999 with public art including work by Maya Lin and Tom Otterness. The scope of this project provided a mechanical, electrical and lighting assessment of existing conditions within the Cleveland Public Library Louis Stokes and original Main library building. Specific items assessed were energy efficient lighting which highlighted the grandeur of Brett Hall, way-finding technologies, computer lab and technology system improvements, and HVAC. Detailed assessments were also conducted in areas to preserve art work and rare books within the library. These assessments focused on the mechanical, electrical, and technology system changes required to make the library a desirable destination for public experiences. Several phasing scenarios were also addressed during the assessment in order to ensure some areas of the main library could remain open while the other areas were being renovated. The first phase of the assessment involved the renovation and expansion of the existing TechCentral in the lower level of the Louis Stokes Building. As a result of the assessment, a number of future projects were identified and completed as funding became available. Tec was involved as the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology and lighting design firm for the renovation and expansion of TechCentral (Phase 1), Louis Stokes Wing First & Second Floors, and the Main Building First Floor (Phase 2), and the Digital Hub (Phase 3).
