The Sandusky Public Library is a Grand Carnegie structure that has been featured in several books focused on Carnegie libraries. With such a storied history, any expansion or renovation had to be approached with care. This project is a major renovation and expansion of the existing library building. Several adjacent properties were purchased to facilitate this expansion, resulting in substantial modifications to the utilities. The adjacent county jail building was converted to house staff/support and community functions, connected to the library through a new addition. All areas of the library will benefit from increased space allocation and improved mechanical and electrical utilities. The lighting design challenges were the unification of several independent structures and providing appropriate illumination levels. Consistent application of linear fluorescent lamps, as well as compact fluorescent lamp technologies, allows excellent color rendition and superior energy efficiency. The design program included the complete upgrade and expansion of the technology infrastructure. New data closets to house patch panels and hubs, as well as voice cabling bring the library up to date with the latest in technology. Wireless access capability is now available throughout the building. The mechanical systems design was approached with care to provide the appropriate balance between environmental comfort, energy efficiency and cost. The design maintained maximum ceiling heights for the large open areas within the existing building.
